Dragonsbane #1: Blue Kobolds?

There were six of us at the table for the first real session of the new campaign. Ronn ran the game and the same five players who made characters returned to continue the adventure. That’s always a good sign.

Chas’za the Saurian, lizardfolk ranger
Claudius Lyander, human artificer
Haden Roughstone, human cleric of Ephara and templar of the Pantheon
Kresh the Nyxborn, tiefling paladin
Quinn Kai, human monk from the lands of Olde World

When we left off, the adventurers had just fought a quartet of skeletal horrors when a kobold peeked from the wall at the other end of the room and then disappeared into the wall. Never a good sign.

Following the kobold they found a sliding door hidden behind some shelves slid away to reveal a stairwell descending into a very dark cavern. Once their light was set, they noticed splashes and streaks of blue paint low on the walls and floors. Blue footprints led them down into the caverns and despite the kobolds attempts to ambush the party, they were outmatched and knocked around badly. Unable to match the adventurers in a stand up fight, the kobolds attempted to lure them into a mass of green slime. It didn’t help them much. There were three or four groups of kobolds in the caverns, all were painted blue to one degree or another, and all were defeated or chased off into the foothills beyond the cave.

Why is there a boat there? That’s not right.

The one kobold they captured was quick to tell them all about the raid and the dragon and anything else he could tell them to save his life. Then he broke and ran, making it to the latrine and jumped down the toilet pit, disappearing into the mess below. The adventurers did not go after it.

Searching the cavern, they found empty cans of blue paint and used brushes. They found a cave full of goods stollen from travelers on the road and most likely from smaller villages in the area. The bulkier and less valuable items (food stuffs, textiles, etc…) remained behind, but loose coins and deep wagon tracks indicated that much portable wealth had been removed recently.

The group returned to Ojai to tell Castellan Escobert the Red of their findings and warn him of the forthcoming bandit raid. He assured them that the town would be ready and left them to make preparations as the townfolk dragged them away to the tavern to tell their tale and enjoy the fruits of their heroics.

Drinks were shared. Singing, dancing, and tall tales were indulged in until well into the evening. When the sun set and Ojai was blanketed in the fullness of night the sounds of fight and fire washed through the open doors of the tavern. Stepping outside, the adventurers saw raiders and kobolds in the streets, open flames upon the roofs, and most disturbing of all a dragon in the sky bellowing lightning at the towns central keep. Things were not looking good.

The characters have earned their advancement to 2nd level, but will that be enough to sway the outcome of this raid on the town. Come back in two weeks to learn what happens next.

Started playing TTRPGs with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons back when you could buy the rulebooks from the Sears catalog. Been playing and running games ever since.
