Dragonsbane #4: Victory, Theft, and Loss

We had the full compliment of six players joined together for the fourth session of The Dragonsbane Mask campaign. Ronn was at the head of the table behind the DM screen and to refresh your memory, we present our 2nd level adventurers.

Chasza the Saurian, lizardfolk ranger
Claudius Lyander, human artificer
Haden Roughstone, human cleric of Ephara and Templar of the Pantheon
Kresh the Nyxborn, tiefling paladin
Quinn Kai, human monk from the lands of Olde World

When we left our heroes they were dealing with a disinterested but persistent dragon that seemed intent on leveling the keep through a barrage of lightning bolts. The army of raiders was massing outside the keep, and the town was being pilfered of anything of value. Let’s rejoin our heroes and see what the session held for them.

Dragon Attack

The adult blue dragon Lennithon unenthusiastically attacked the keep. The frightful presence of the dragon had become less effective as the night wore on and the horrors stacked up for those trapped within the walls of the keep, but it’s lightning breath continued to wrack terrible damage to the fortress and its defenders. The heroes attempted to convince it to leave or turn on it’s handler, but the dragon was not deterred. Mondath had ordered a final assault on the citadel and the dragon was obligated by the dragonsbane to follow her orders. It made three passes and killed many before the heroes drove it off with a hail of missiles and spells. The dragon wasn’t going to waste it’s time facing these pesky adventurers, and having enough, it left the battle after they found the chinks in its armored skin.

The Sally Port

Before the defenders could catch their breath and celebrate driving off the dragon, raiders broke through into the courtyard below. The keep had a sally port along its west wall for counterattacking foes who bring a battering ram against the gates. A small group of raiders had used it to get into the keep. With most of the defenders dead or wounded, it was up to the adventurers to respond to Escobert’s alarm. The dropped into the courtyard like a rain of steel and magic, sweeping the intruders back and cutting them down.

The sally port was damaged and needed to be repaired to make the keep secure, but as they worked to make the needed repairs another group of raiders burst from the cellars and the battle for the keep resumed. They used magic to mend the door and held their own against the intruders. The fight didn’t take long and the keep was secure once again.

Started playing TTRPGs with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons back when you could buy the rulebooks from the Sears catalog. Been playing and running games ever since.
